Francisco Perez and Paula Contreras, 1911 Marriage in Starr County, Texas

The following is the 1911 marriage record for my wife’s great grandparents, Jose Francisco Perez and Paula Contreras. I think I am spoiled by Mexican records but I sure was expecting a lot more of information on Texas marriage records. It does not list the parents, where they were from, and their ages. Is there any other records to supplement this marriage record or is this it? I only  know whom their parents were since they are listed on their Death Certificate. Paula and Francisco were only married for ten years since she died in 1921 from a snake byte.

UTPAbroncsSeveral months ago I had called the Starr County Clerk office and inquired if I could have access to their Marriage records. I was told yes and provided with location. I inquired if I could take a scanner, or camera and told that I could not. I asked if they had a copier and was advised that they would make the copy for $20.00. I asked for the prices and it was pretty much $20.00 per copy for any document in their archives. I asked if they could search for it and they said it would be $30.00. As you all know this is just a hobby for me and since I needed several images I opted for not going over since it was also 40 miles away from home.

Don’t feel bad this is not the end of the story, luckily for me, while conducting searches at the University of Texas Pan American’s Catalog I came across this title “Starr county records [microfilm]“. I promptly clicked on it and the following is what I found.

If you are into Genealogy like me, then you may already know that this is a treasure trove. Turns out the microfilms 1016452 & 1016453 contained the two marriage records that I was looking for. Guess what I went to the UTPA library and made digital images of the marriage records and all for free. Super convenient since the library is just a few miles away from my workplace.

By the way it took me more time to learn how to use the microfilm reader and computer that what it took to find the marriage records.

So if you are doing research in Starr County this is a great resource to get those needed records.

Happy hunting. If you need for me to look for a record or get you a copy of anything on these microfilms look at my services page for pricing.

The following is the Marriage Record for Apolonio Contreras and Demetria Garza my wife’s 2nd great grandparents. They Married back in 1874 in Starr County, Texas. Several years ago I found the parents of Apolonio on a family tree in ancestry but it is now long gone. Unfortunately I have not found any documents listing his parents to verify that I have the right information and due to this reason I won’t list them here. If anyone has any clues let me know. I know due to Demetria’s death certificate that her parents are Epamuseno Garza and Maria Eugenia Solis. I have yet to also find more information on them.

Irish Lives Remembered A Resource to Help You Research Your Irish Ancestors

Irish Lives RememberredBelieve it or not there are many people in South Texas and Northeastern Mexico with Irish ancestors. I know this because of this regions rich history and the names that I occasionally come across on the church and civil indexes.

On the 8th of January Chris Paton made me aware through Google+ about Irish Lives Remembered a Genealogy Community and its free magazine.

I already downloaded two issues and they are great. Even if you don’t have Irish ancestors I recommend you read them since it is always helpful to see whats available and the stories are great.

You can visit this website here http://irishlivesremembered.com/magazines.html and can read more about the Irish in Mexico at wikipidia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_immigration_to_Mexico.

Have fun and enjoy!

Nuevo Leon: Causas Criminales 1600 a 1900 – Book Review by Crispin Rendon

Earlier today I received the following email from Crispin Rendon. It is his review of the just released book named, Nuevo Leon: Causas Criminales 1600 to 1900 it literally translates to Nuevo Leon: Criminal cases 1600 to 1900. After you read the email you can read my opinion about the book.

Email from Crispin Rendon:

This email is going out to everyone in my genealogy address book.

I think some of you may be interested.

There is no need to respond.

Nuevo Leon Crime Book Review

Nuevo León: Causas Criminales 1600 a 1900

Book in pdf format sold at $73.32 U.S. Dollars (I used PayPal)

The book was sent as an email attachment (no shipping fee required)

http://www.Genealogia.org.mx

For further information contact

Benicio Samuel Sanchez

Genealogista e Historiador Familiar

Email: samuelsanchez@genealogia.org.mx

This book is 568 pages without an index but could have been 200 with some judicious formatting changes.

This book is a listing of criminal cases from the Mexican State of Nuveo Leon.

A total of 1,106 criminal cases dating from Nov 23, 1621 to Apr 19 1897

1600s(186 cases)

1700s(456 cases)

1800s(464 cases)

Each case is laid out in the follow data fields:

Fondo, Seccion de Fondo, Serie, Titulo, Lenga, Luga, Fecha, Fojas, Coleccion, Volumen, Expediente, Folio, Notas, Descipcion.

All of the Lengua fields have “ESPAÑOL” and all of Coleccion fields have “CAUSAS CRIMINALES”. (Word Bloat?)

24 records have no title or description given.

Inconsistent use of accents marks make a pdf reader Seach feature a hit or miss.

If you search for Valle de PILON your search will miss VALLE DEL PILÓN

Descriptions are short and may be identical to the title field.

The large Genealogia logo watermark found centered on each page is sure to annoy most readers

This book could benefit from some more editing.

Why is this book important?

I see it as a valuable resource.

Today, we learn about crime from newspapers, television and radio. Why is it presented to us at all?

I think it is because we want to know about it! If daily crime is not enough for us, we read crime novels.

I read the whole book in two days. That is more crime than you will every find in a crime novel.

There is little or no genealogy information in this book but I found some of the people presented in this book also in my genealogy database. Some were criminals and others victims.

One women, appearing in this book also will be found in my soon to appear “Families of Salinas Victoria” book. She beat her servant to death.

Juliana de las Casas, who is an ancestor to thousands of people in my database, appears as a victim.

There are few other cases of people found in my records.

The bottom line is if you want to know more about any of these crimes you have the details in the book for how to find it in the archives.

Best Regards,

Crispin Rendon

My Opinion:

I hope that this email either helps you decide as to weather buy the book or not. A few days ago I saw Benicio’s post on his website and thus was excited just by the name of the book, but then when he showed a sample of one of the entries I made up my mind to not even bother with it. Since I immediately recognized that it had the same format from the Archives of Monterrey Website. You can get the link on my previous post Archivos Historicos de Monterrey – Historical Archives of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico but, I might be mistaken.

Once you are at the Website for the Monterrey Archives, you can select Spanol as Lengua and then Colleccion Causas Criminales and finally press buscar and you will get the hundreds if not thousands of cases not just of Monterrey but surrounding localities such as Cerralvo.

What I am really exited and can’t wait for is Crispin’s book, Families of Salinas Victoria. His books are the best! Please leave your comments on the comment section.

A few hours after my book review an upgraded version of the Nuevo Leon crime book arrived by email.

The Logo remains but now as a ghost in the background instead of the bold in you face logo in the earlier version.

Thank you Genealogía de México!

As additional hype for this book see the following two case file descriptions that may interest some of you.

Location of Convent of San Francisco, Monterrey – An Email from George P. Cervantes

$

I received the following email from George P. Cervantes and I requested him to let me share it with you since the information and links contained in it are excellent. The previous post George is referring to is Convento de San Francisco 1590 to 1914, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

Subject: Location of San Francisco, Monterrey

Hi Moises-

First, thanks for your We Are Cousins blog – a lot of interesting information! I have a number of ancestors on my mom’s side from Tamaulipas/Nuevo Leon. I haven’t seen you mention any of them yet, but we have some ancestors’ last names in common (de la Garza, Guerra, Treviño).

Anyway, I’m just getting you some info on your 12/12/12 post about the location of San Francisco in Monterrey. Maybe you have your answer already, but I found some information on this not-very active blog:

http://clioregio.blogspot.com/2009/10/el-extinto-convento-de-san-andres-de.html

That information seems to place it near the present corner of Calle Ignacio Zaragosa and Calle Melchor Ocampo (which used to be called San Francisco).

This location seems to be verified by this US Naval Intelligence map (click on “Monterey”); it was published in 1919, but it looks like the information was gathered before San Francisco was destroyed. “San Francesco Ch.” is labelled “3″:

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/historical/mexico_handbook_1919.html

It also seems to be in this 1905 map in Spanish, where no name is listed, just a cross at the corner of S. Francisco & Zaragosa:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/9302991@N05/3561352522/sizes/o/in/pool-471099@N24/

You can see the top of San Francisco to the left in this 1846 print, looking from the area near the Cathedral (the view is looking to the west-northwest, I think):

http://www.djibnet.com/photo/1846/plaza-zaragoza-monterrey-g-w-endicott-1846-3642634670.html#

and here’s a 1909 photo, from a distance – it’s in the middle right of the

photo:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/italintheheart/3582796621/in/pool-monterrey_antiguo

So…it looks to me like San Francisco was located in the middle of what’s now Calle Ignacio Zaragosa, just south of present-day Calle Melchor Ocampo; probably facing more or less north (facing up Zaragosa). And, sadly, the building appears to be all gone – to say nothing of all the people buried there. According to the first article I mentioned, some of the artifacts are in the Museo del Obispado.

I hope this is helpful. Thanks again for your work on the blog!

-George P. Cervantes

Once again thanks George for the excellent information, I hope that you all found it helpful and informative as I did.

Indians, Padres, Settlers, Ranchers, Farmers, and Education – History in A Mural

I grew up in La Grulla, in South Texas. This small quiet town is only a few miles away from the river bordering Mexico and about 60 miles from where I was born and raised. When I was going through Jr. High I used to see the following mural each day for three years, 6th – 8th grade, and never got tired of seeing it. It would cause many questions and also remind me of the small Mexican town of El Arcabuz. El Arcabuz used to have a similar mural but instead of depicting the heritage of its area as the following picture does.  The one in El Arcabuz depicted the rise and birth of a nation, depicting characters as Miguel Hidalgo and Benito Juarez. I wish I had a picture of the one in Arcabuz but I don’t, I asked on their facebook page to see if anyone has one.

This is the Mural at the La Grulla Middle School taken by Jimmy Martinez

La Grulla Middle School MuralYou can see Jimmy’s post in Facebook and according to comments on face book the mural was painted in 1976 – 1978 by  Mr. Sergio Higareda.

As you can see the mural depicts this areas rich heritage and history. Starting with the indigenous people and then the effort of the church to Christianize them. Then we see the the Spaniard rule by the sword and the ranching that ensued. Then this area became part of the United States and towards the end we see farming that still continues to this date. Finally science and education.

Nicolas de Ayala, 1741 Church Death Record, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon Mexico

The following is the 1741 church death record for my wife’s 7th great grandfather Nicolas de Ayala. The following document also indicates that his wife was Antonia de la Garza. The document also indicates that he left a will which I have yet to find. Also he names his sons Joseph Baptista and Caietano de Ayala as his executors. It is interesting to note that Nicolas is my 10th great grand uncle since he was the brother of Catalina de Ayala my 10th great grandmother and yes their parents are our common ancestors.
